Refugee Protection in ASEAN: National Failures, Regional Responsibilities

Countries in Southeast Asia act as origins, transit routes, and destinations for an increasing number of refugees, asylum-seekers, and other forcibly displaced people from the region and other parts of the world. Fleeing conflict, persecution, and other dire circumstances in their home countries, they are continually left vulnerable to a variety of human rights abuses carried out by both state and non-state actors in multiple countries. Sadly, refugee problems are being severely neglected in the context of mixed migration.

This is the press statement released at the end of the 3rd Regional Consultation Meeting on ASEAN and Human Rights, held in Kuala Lumpur during 16-19 September 2010, by the SAPA Task Force on ASEAN and Human Rights.

Khmer-Thai people's reconciliation event slideshow

PEF, in collaboration with the Buddhist and Khmer Society Network (BKSN) and Working Group for Peace (WGP) in Cambodia, held a Khmer-Thai people's reconciliation event in Siem Reap, Cambodia and Sisaket, Thailand from June 25-28, 2010.

ASEAN network meeting slideshow

Pictures from PEF's ASEAN network meeting, June 11-12 in Bangkok.  Participants listened to panel discussions on the environment, democracy, free trade agreements, migrant labor, and Thai-Khmer people's reconciliation.  An initial action plan for engaging communities in ASEAN issues was decided by the grassroots partners.
